Ekal Vidyalayas are one teacher schools of about 30 children in the tribal and remote villages of India. There are no permanent school buildings. Classes are held in a verandah, under a tree or where space is available. The teacher, students and the blackboard make an Ekal school. There are at present about 84,000 Ekal schools with enrollment of about two million children. About 500,000 children move from Ekal schools to regular schools every year, where they excel. Many of these children would have little chance of getting education but for these schools. Below is a picture of an Ekal School.
Ekal Villages – The villages where Ekal schools are located have on average population of about 500, or about 150 households. Ekal has taken education at the door steps of these children. Donation of $500 supports one school for one year. 60% of this donation amount is spent on teacher salary, 27% on teacher training, 5% on school supplies and the rest on operating the schools.
Mission – Holistic development of remote villages in India by providing Education (Ekal schools), Health and Hygiene (Arogya) and Economic Development (Gamothan).
Ekal Chapters – Ekal is a worldwide organization with chapters in many countries, with head quarters in New Delhi. In Canada, there are chapters in almost all the major cities, with headquarters in Mississauga. Niagara Region Chapter under the leadership of Ajay and Rachna Sharma is the newest chapter.
